A new review of tax forms released by the American Hospital Association (AHA) suggests nonprofit hospitals and health systems increased their collective total community benefit by $49 billion—nearly 50%—from 2017 to 2022. The review, released Wednesday and conducted with Ernst & Young on behalf of the lobbying group, tallied $149 billion spent on areas like health professional education, medical research and cash or other in-kind contributions benefiting the community.

On Thursday, September 11, the healthcare consumer advocacy group, Families USA, facilitated a press conference with Florida Voices for HealthGeorgians for a Healthy Future, and West Virginians for Affordable Healthcare, discussing the recent federal budget cuts to healthcare and their impact on working families in Florida, Georgia, and West Virginia.

The Harris Poll, which surveyed 1,504 frontline healthcare employees and 304 employers between June 26 and July 21, comes as burnout remains pervasive across the industry. Demand for healthcare workers is outpacing supply in most areas, especially rural regions, making attrition a pressing problem for employers. Physicians are asking for greater certainty around Medicare reimbursement, arguing that compounding payment decreases over time have drastically increased the pressure on practices. Industry organizations, individual physicians and others weighed in through comments on the proposed Physician Fee Schedule, which were due Friday. The proposed legislation would bump up payments by 3.62% next year, accounting for a 2.5% payment adjustment under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

On Monday, September 15, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced details on how states can apply for funding from the $50 billion Rural Health Transformation Program (RHTP), established under the Working Families Tax Cuts Act. According to a news release, the investment aims to empower states to improve the rural healthcare infrastructure and develop sustainable systems that increase access, improve the quality of care, and achieve better patient outcomes.
