Alan Morgan, CEO of the National Rural Health Association, says telehealth holds significant potential to save the future of rural healthcare. However, ongoing problems such as spotty broadband access, poor digital literacy and inadequate communication are preventing utilization from becoming widespread across rural communities.

The open notes concept evolved from a trial involving about 10,000 patients a little more than a decade ago to last year becoming part of federal law that allows the nation’s 340 million patients to see the notes their physicians take during their visits.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced this week that it awarded $16.3 million in grant funding to enhance the telehealth infrastructure and capacity of reproductive health clinics throughout the country. 

Nonprofit hospitals faced a tough first quarter with many reporting net losses amid escalating expenses for pricier labor and diminished investment returns.
