Amid market shifts and shallower pockets, health system leaders are restrategizing. Hospitals across the country are juggling new and ongoing financial pressures, increasing digital health initiatives and the need to provide high-quality care.  On Monday during a session at the symplr Healthcare Operations Summit in Chicago, hospital leaders discussed how they approach the balancing act between innovation and financial sustainability. They shared tactics such as reassessing vendor contracts, leaning into existing tech capabilities and finding creative ways to support patients without compromising margins.

Medicare coverage of obesity medications could drive a substantial rise in healthcare spending, according to a new study. A microsimulation model published in JAMA Health Forum projected that Medicare expenditures would increase by $47.7 billion over 10 years if drugs such as Wegovy and Zepbound were covered under Medicare Part D. 

American workers are currently facing a shifting labor market: with job openings at a four-year low, employees are both seeking stability and bringing an increased level of discernment to potential job changes. But one thing remains consistent. Even in this environment of heightened economic uncertainty, a critical factor determining whether employees stay or go remains the same: healthcare.

The Supreme Court ruled in HHS’ favor April 29 in a case challenging how the department calculates disproportionate share hospital payments for Supplemental Security Income benefits. The case, Advocate Christ Medical Center v. Kennedy, centered on how hospitals calculate the Medicare fraction used in determining DSH adjustments. Hospitals has argued that more patients should be included in the Medicare fraction based on their enrollment in SSI, regardless of whether a cash benefit was paid during the month of treatment.
